Sustainable Software Development

21st April @ 1:30pm - 1.40pm

Current practise of developing software and some of the latest trends are not sustainable due to the heavy electricity and hardware cost of the HUGE quantities of data our digital systems currently use. In this lightning talk Amit will talk about WHY it is not sustainable while hinting at revolutionary practises to enable it to be so.

About the Speaker

Amit Kumar is a consultant and technologist with around 25 years of experience in software architecture, design and development. He has been an Agile Coach for various projects enabling organisations transition to their ‘Agile’ journey

Amit has been involved in working with artificial intelligence based software since the beginning of his career. It always intrigued him on how increasingly power hungry systems are becoming day by day. Working in the (CAD/CAM and) retail industry for over two decades has made him cognizant of the need for sustainable software development.

This led him to explore ways to reduce the carbon footprint on the environment created by IT development and deployments. Amit has since been researching and championing the cause of sustainable software development. He proposes ways to develop a sustainable codebase, as well as raising awareness amongst the techies that the system architecture and code can also have an impact on the environment. He is actively driving sustainability in his current organisation.
